STATEMENT FROM OPCIÓN MARXISTA INTERNACIONAL

October 14, 2025

On September 29, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu—leaders of the darkest and most hated governments in the world today—presented the so-called “Gaza Peace Plan,” which purportedly aims to “end the war in Gaza and the broader crisis in the Middle East.” Two days later, Netanyahu hailed the agreement as “a great day for Israel.” Trump stated: “I am proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our peace plan…as a first step toward a solid, lasting, and everlasting peace.” He added: “This is an incredible victory for Israel.” – See the full text of the Plan here

Such statements, coming from those directly responsible for the genocide and suffering of the Palestinian people, clearly reveal the true objective of the Plan: to consolidate Zionist and imperialist interests in Palestine and the region. Hence, the “Plan” enjoys the support of all governments. Both from the world’s major powers, which from the beginning endorsed the Zionist occupation and contributed weapons and funding to the current ethnic cleansing, and from the governments that directly or indirectly supported it, as well as from far-right politicians and, unfortunately, also from governments that claim to be «progressive» or «left-wing.»

Therefore, knowing the authors and promoters of the «Plan,» no consistent defender of the Palestinian cause should be confused about its true nature and nefarious objectives.

However, the confusion about the supposed benefits of the «Peace Plan» began on October 10, when the leaders of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) not only signed Trump’s «proposal» but also praised its authors. All this without clarifying that it was an imposed plan, as this «Plan» is based on the genocide of more than 69,000 Palestinians, including 19,000 children; 1,722 health workers; hundreds of journalists; and more than 169,000 wounded; not counting the prisoners in Israeli jails or the situation of a besieged population subjected to extreme hunger and the frenzied destruction of Gaza.

Let us not be fooled. Although it may temporarily grant the people of Gaza a respite amid a catastrophic and heartbreaking context and thousands of prisoners may be released, the so-called «peace» agreement is an imposition achieved after two years of extermination, bombing, hunger, displacement, and constant siege.

This explains why the Palestinian population welcomed the ceasefire with joy. This momentary respite represents a minimal relief in their dejected lives. They want to escape the dead end they were led into. To have food, medicine, peace, education. To live again. It means a pause for a people fighting not to die, to maintain their dignity, and not to surrender.

However, the major international media have exploited this joy to present the agreement as a «triumph.» They equate the suffering of the Palestinian victims with the celebrations of the Zionist perpetrators.

Caught between the sword of genocide and the hard place of the Trump-Netanyahu plan, and relying on the more than justified sense of despair among the Palestinian population, the Hamas leadership and the other factions signed the first phase of the disastrous «Peace Plan.»

On paper, there appear to be benefits for the Palestinians: a ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian aid, the release of prisoners, the reconstruction of Gaza, among other points. However, upon examining the details, the infamous ruse is revealed.

The agreement requires Gaza to give up everything: accept a foreign administration of its territory, “governed by a technocratic and apolitical Palestinian committee, under the supervision of a new international transitional body,” chaired by none other than Trump.

An administration whose task would be “to manage financing for the redevelopment of Gaza” and “attract investment.” In other words, to turn the Palestinian population and territory into prey for international financial capital. In this way, Gaza would become a highly lucrative business for the powers that be, at the expense of the labor, blood, and suffering of the Palestinian people.

Israel, for its part, has no deadline for its withdrawal from the Strip, nor for lifting the blockade. While the “demilitarization of Gaza,” the surrender of weapons, the release of “hostages,” and the dissolution of Hamas and other factions are demanded, there is no mention at all of the Israeli occupation army disarming or being held accountable for this new Holocaust. Much less is there any recognition of the national rights of the Palestinian people.

This “peace” plan grants complete impunity to Zionism. It humiliates Palestine and strengthens the Zionist state to continue its “greater Israel” project. It also reaffirms it as the “aircraft carrier” of the United States and other powers in the region.

For the Zionist entity, responsible for massacres, expulsions, bombings, and systematic ethnic cleansing since 1947, there are no limits or demands. The plan says nothing about the colonial occupation, the genocide, or the victims it has caused. It legitimizes the occupation and leaves the genocide unpunished. It confirms the history of humiliation that began with the British in 1917 and has been ongoing since 1947, with the endorsement of the UN.

The Palestinian nation remains under its domination and constant siege. Zionism controls its territory by land, air, and sea; it maintains its abominable system of apartheid. It blocks the movement of Palestinians and restricts the entry of basic supplies for daily life, as well as medical personnel and journalists.

This plan seeks to complete by political means what has already been achieved through a war of extermination of Gazans and the almost total destruction of Gaza. Zionism’s colonizing advance has been reinforced with a new victory.

The result is clear: Palestine is left weaker and more dependent, while Israel is strengthened and armored.

So, where is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to recover their land? Where is their right to national liberation? Where is their historic and inalienable right to return to the nation that belongs to them?

The best possible solution?

There is no doubt that circumstances compel the Palestinians and their political organizations to accept this infamous plan. But for the future of the Palestinian people—and for all of us who remain steadfast in the consistent defense of their cause—an objective and transparent assessment of what happened, without self-deception, is essential.

The need to continue the struggle for the complete liberation of Palestine demands that the leaders of Hamas and other Palestinian factions, in accepting the «Trump Plan,» do so clearly before their people: that they openly declare that they are forced to accept it. And that this is a setback, not a step forward. It is a political and moral duty to recognize that we are facing a temporary defeat, not a victory.

Every leader of a struggle—be it a strike or a national liberation process—has the right and obligation to negotiate with its enemy. It can agree to measures that imply a temporary defeat if doing so prevents greater damage. But what it cannot do, under any circumstances, is present a defeat as a victory or praise the enemy.

Therefore, it is unacceptable that Hamas and the other factions have declared that they «appreciate President Donald Trump’s efforts to permanently end the war» or that they praise governments allied with imperialism, stating that they «highly value the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.» Such statements only confuse the Palestinian people about their enemies and, in the future, weaken their struggle.

And, for us, this behavior does not change even if it concerns leaders of the Palestinian resistance, whom we clearly defend against Zionism and the imperialists, but not like many, who consider them leaders who cannot be criticized or are «blameless.» The decisive factor in the struggle is always to appreciate the specific circumstances in which the leaders make pacts or agreements and to judge what they do. Let’s give a hypothetical example to illustrate this:

«Let’s suppose a strike led by Lenin is lost and we are forced to sign an agreement that leaves 200 workers out of the factory. If the union leaders of another factory say, ‘What a formidable agreement Lenin signed, leaving 200 workers out of work!’ That is a betrayal and a deception of the workers.

We, on the contrary, must say, ‘What a scoundrel boss, who left 200 workers out of work!’ We must in no way support or praise the agreements imposed by these bosses. Furthermore, we must tell the workers the whole truth: the defeat was so great that Lenin was forced to sign that scoundrel agreement.» (Nahuel Moreno).

THE PALESTINIAN CAUSE IS STILL VALID!

For now, the bombings have stopped, but that does not mean the occupation and colonization have ended. Only its form and timing have changed.

Undoubtedly, we cannot continue as if nothing had happened. However, this serious setback does not invalidate the struggle for the liberation of Palestine and the destruction of the Zionist entity. On the contrary, the Palestinian cause remains relevant, as long as the Zionist state exists. Reality today demands more than ever a consistent mobilization for a secular, democratic, and non-racist Palestine, without discrimination based on religious or ethnic grounds. Only in this way can the definitive liberation of the Palestinian people and the peoples of the region be achieved, under a government led by the working class.

Regrouping and reorganizing the struggle requires a profound reflection on the methods and policies that have guided the leadership of the resistance and the Palestinian Authority until now—especially since the disastrous Oslo Accords. It is necessary to recover the lessons of the Intifada as an experience of massive popular uprising. Led by youth, women, the population, and the working class, it proved to be the most effective method for challenging both Zionist forces and imperialist interests and their local allies.

This reflection could lead the Palestinians to recognize the ineffectiveness of a strategy based on the actions of groups that, although courageous, are elitist and underestimate the importance of mass revolutionary action. They should turn their gaze to the Palestinian people, to their heroism and their will to not renounce their national identity and their cause. They should organize, when appropriate, a mass, armed, and combative action, a new Intifada, guided by a clear program that does not renounce the definitive eradication of the Zionist entity, Palestinian sovereignty over their territory, and their people’s right of return.

The circumstances of the current setback make it urgent to maintain and expand international solidarity. The strikes and mobilizations in Italy, Spain, and other countries show the way for youth, democratic, union, and left-wing organizations to not lower their banners and to sustain the mobilizations denouncing the genocide and, of course, repudiating Trump’s plan. This solidarity must build bridges with the working class, as was done in Italy with the general strike or as the dockworkers of Bilbao did.

Our forces remain committed to the Palestinian cause, as they were many years ago. Because its liberation is inseparable from the emancipatory struggles of the peoples and workers of the world. Today, our program of fighting for a secular, democratic, and non-racist Palestine, with full equal rights for all its inhabitants, remains fully valid.
